dental emergencies

Tooth knocked out

If you have knocked out a tooth, it is recommended that you seek dental input inside an hour. If you are handling the tooth, only hold it by the crown (the top) and do not touch the root. This will give us the best chance of saving it.

If it is an adult tooth, you should rinse it in clean water or milk and gently place the tooth back into the socket, if possible. If this is not an option due to pain, cracked tooth or other issues, put the tooth into a cup of milk or wrap it up in clean cling wrap and bring it into the clinic.

DO NOT replace knocked out tooth if it is a baby tooth. Call us immediately for an emergency appointment if this is the case.

We allocate appointments each day for emergencies. We understand that emergencies occur at all times of the day and we try to be as flexible as possible.

Chipped or broken tooth

Have you cracked or broken your tooth? Call us immediately. Apply a cold compress if the area is swelling and rinse your mouth with warm water.

Do you have the broken pieces of tooth? If you do, we may be able to reattach them. If we can’t repair the tooth this way, we will look into other techniques such as bonding or veneers, if it is what is best for you.

Wisdom tooth pain

If you are having pain in your wisdom teeth or any other tooth, it may signal that your wisdom teeth are impacted or that there is an infection. If you have persistent bad breath, finding hard to chew or have a terrible taste in your mouth, then this is also a sign to give us a call.

The best thing to do until you see a dentist is to keep the wisdom tooth or other affected teeth clean by gently brushing and also by rinsing your mouth out with warm boiled water with a little salt.

Infection

If you think you may have a dental infection, our dentists will be able to examine you to determine if this is the case. They will use a range of methods to diagnose an infection.

If the pain is getting worse, the taste in your mouth is intensifying, your breath is becoming noticeably smelly and even experiencing “flu-like” symptoms then you will need an emergency appointment with a dentist. If you don’t see somebody quickly, the infection could get worse and spread very quickly.

Call us and ask for an on the day emergency appointment if you suspect that you have a dental infection and we will attempt to accommodate your needs.

Broken jaw

If you or someone you are with has a suspected broken jaw, the best thing to do is to go to the Emergency Department of the nearest hospital. Use a cold compress to reduce the swelling as much as possible. When at the hospital, you will be advised on the best course of action and if there is any dentist work that needs to be completed, we can help.
